There are plenty of great HGV driver jobs around, with driver recruitment at an all-time high due to a shortage of HGV drivers in the industry. Should you get a job as an esteemed tramper, there is some essential knowledge and some creature comforts you simply won’t be able to do without.

 

Here are three essential HGV driver tramper tips you’ll be grateful to know…

 

1. Be sure that the job’s a good fit for you

If you’re new to the world of tramping, be sure to break yourself in before spending a lot of money kitting your cab out with all the mod cons and anything you may possibly need. Be certain you are comfortable in the role, and spend a good few nights out on the job, testing the field, just to see how you go. You may take to it like a duck to water. You may find it’s just not for you. Until you start, you just won’t know, so hold off on investing a wedge into your cab until you’re certain.

2. Decide if you’re a cab hopper

If you’re going to be cab hoping you need to keep all your tramping essentials down to a bare minimum, as you’ll have to move things from cab to cab a lot. The more you have, the longer it will take and the easier it is to forget or lose something.

If you’re going to have one wagon of your own, begin with the basics: a stove, a mini-fridge, comfortable and warm bedding, and work your way up to a portable TV and other non-essential items.

3. Get the right tramping kit

If you’re looking into become a HGV driver, bear in mind that once you’ve landed a job it can prove tricky to decide what to take with you. Here’s a list of essential kit that you will absolutely need:

• A sleeping bag or a really big duvet (duvets make everything a bit more homey)
• Pillows
• Toilet paper and kitchen roll
• Loads and loads of baby wipes
• A good supply of water, in case you get stuck
• A thermos mug
• A kettle, as well as tea and coffee (the ready mix 3-in-1 sachets of coffee are brilliant!)
• Ear plugs – these will ensure you get a solid night’s rest
• Rubbish bags
• Spare fuses and a basic tool kit
• A washing up bowl
• Shower flip flops
• Extra clothes for various weather conditions
